We can brag here about the wildlife we've seen in our back yard. There's been deer, fox, rabbits (by the dozens of course), chipmunks, groundhogs, porcupines, raccoons, squirrels, a wolf, wild turkeys, coyotes, moles, mice, garter snakes, frogs and someone's cat.
Generally, we are caught off guard by these creatures of nature. If we go to the window with the intent of searching out an animal, we are more than likely to waste our time. It's when we are walking through the kitchen or family room that we see something out of the corner of our eye, and we snap our head, and there will be the bright reddish-orange of the fox as he finds his way across the snowy field, or we'll see the doe walking along the edge of the wooded area with her fawns following close behind.
Yesterday, while typing away on the keyboard, I caught something out of the corner of my eye, and yes, it was this small flock of turkeys. Now, let's talk turkey for a moment. The males are called Toms or Gobblers, and the females are called Hens. They are not attractive birds, in fact, they are some ugly! These birds can barely fly, and they forage on the ground or climb (yes climb) shrubs and small trees to rustle up some grub.. They will also eat small amphibians and snakes. Wonderful.
Well, these three meandered their way through the backyard yesterday, and I thought to myself... I wonder what Turkey Jerky would taste like? And then I remembered I don't like Jerky anyway, so it really doesn't matter.
